This is a part of our “Thankful Thoughts” series where we asked our SMART Exemplary Educators what they’re thankful for this time of year.
In this season of giving thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for all the wonderful joys in my life. I’m very thankful that I’m a husband, father, teacher, mentor and friend. I have so many wonderful people in my life it’s a joy to get up every day.
As an educator during this time of year I like to express my joy with my students. I tell them every day how happy I am to be here in their school and what an honor it is to help educate them for their future.
Every day in November I start each of my classes with what I’m thankful for. I then have my students write down one thing every day that they are thankful for in their lives. This leads into an assignment that I do the week of Thanksgiving. I have each of my students create thank you cards for the teachers in my school. All teachers and staff will receive one card from my students. It’s a nice way to leave for break and to have students express why they are thankful for that member of the school community. Each student tells that member why they are thankful for having them in our school and the influence they had on them. I want the students (who are juniors and seniors) to understand the full meaning of this time of year.
Today, I’m aware of the fact that there are many elements in my life that are better than I deserve. The world is full of so many letdowns, hardships, regrets, and pain. When I think of this, I know I’m truly blessed to able to be thankful for so many things in my life. This is why I know it’s my duty to spread this joy with others and to let them know there are many things to be thankful for in this sometimes crazy world.
I know my role is not just to educate my students with the subjects they are taking but to mentor and be a role model for them. Because of these elements in my life and the career choice I made, I am truly blessed and thankful for everything in my life.
