How to Deliver the 4Cs in Education

Do you remember when education was defined as the three Rs? Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic? We have entered the 21st century and this definition has changed. Now education is defined as the four Cs: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

When I signed up for a trial of SMART amp, I had no idea how it would change my classroom. It was not until I connected my students to the product and gave them an assignment did I sit back and watch in awe. It was the first time I had seen the 4 Cs in education working naturally and flawlessly.

We had just finished reading two stories in our reading book about two different people who lived during revolutionary war times. One was a young boy named Joseph Plumb Martin and the other was a young lady named Sybil Ludington. I wanted my students to compare and contrast the two characters from the stories. I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to try SMART amp.

At this point, my students had never used the program at all. We have Google apps in our school, so my students were able to access SMART amp through their apps. They then joined our classroom using the code I had given them. On my end, I created a workspace and allowed all of my students to join. Chaos ensued as 26 students tried to write all over the space at one time. Everybody got the hang of the program quickly though.

Next, I created workspaces and assigned two or three students to a page. I made sure students were on opposite sides of the room from each other. I explained to them that the only way they could communicate was by using the chat window. I also explained that, on my end, I could see who contributed what to the project. Therefore, one person could not sit back and let the other do everything.

Below are some examples of a few final products. As you look at them, think about the creativity the students put into these projects. They were all given the same assignment, yet they are all different.

Using a chat window as their only form of communication, imagine the collaboration and critical thinking they needed to do to put together something that would look cohesive.

  1. I love making them chat with each other rather than talking. It helps them when having to be effective in communicating their ideas.

  2. I always tell my students to “talk loudly” on the chat board, not in person. SMARTamp is an excellent tool for teaching digital communication skills.

  3. This is so good, will try and incorporate the 4C’s in my daily activities and investigate its effectiveness in higher education.

  4. I look forward to trying SMART amp with my students. I am curious to see how it will work with younger students (2nd grade).
